SETTING UP YOUR SALTWATER CHLORINE GENERATOR – MAKING CHLORINE

Congratulations on the purchase of your saltwater chlorine generator. For best results, we suggest you follow the included ControlOMatic directions to ensure an optimal setup and the correct balancing of your hot tub or spa water.

In the event you have completed the setup instructions but the spa water is not balancing correctly, we suggest following these suggestions.

  • Start with fresh water and then add salt.
  • To reach a salt concentration of 2000PPM, you may need to use 1.5 pounds of salt per 100 gallons of water.
  • The water should balance, which means a minimum pH of 7.5 and chlorine at 2 PM.

If the saltwater chlorine generator is showing a 0 reading after several days, it is possible the fresh water and fresh salt had more organic compounds and were higher in phosphates – both of which put a stress demand on the chlorine generator.

You may need to shock the water and use a phosphate remover. Please ensure you follow the manufacturer’s recommendations when shocking or using a phosphate remover. If you are planning to use your chlorine generator, please select a chlorine-free shock.

REMOVING SCALE BUILD-UP ON A SALTWATER GENERATOR

ControlOMatic equips all saltwater chorine generators with self-cleaning modes. While this cleaning process is efficient, it may not keep scale completely away from the titanium plates. To ensure the chlorine generator does not short out and to avoid plate damage, white scale (looks like salt, but is in fact calcium or scale) should be cleaned off the unit immediately.

  1. Turn off the unit.
  2. Fill a large plastic cup with warm water and half a capful of pH down or white vinegar
  3. Place the cell in the plastic cup for at least 30 minutes
  4. Remove cell from solution and rinse off. Stubborn scale may need to be shaken off the unit.
COLD SPA WATER TEMPERATURE

Please note the ControlOMatic saltwater chlorine generators are intended for use in water above 60F or 15.5C. The chlorinators are not able to operate efficiently in cold or at low temperatures. By doing do, you may diminish the life span of the titanium plates.

SALT LEVEL INDICATOR

The ControlOMatic TechniChlor, ChlorMaker, SmarterChlor and MegaChlor all include a salt level indicator. During the chlorine production cycle, the LED light colour indicates the salt level.

BLUE: The salt is okay
RED: The salt may be low
GREEN: The salt may be high

Please remember not to add salt without measuring first. Salt can last a long time and the level indicated by the chlorinator may not match a manual test. This is due to the fact the chlorinator is designed to measure the levels from between the titanium plates. The current can affect the salt level, as do minerals in your water along with water temperature.

Your Title Goes HereSALT LED INDICATOR GREEN OR BLUE, BUT LOW CHLORINE PRODUCTION

ControlOMatic products typically last for 7000 to 10,000 hours of chlorine production. As the generator reaches the 7000-hour mark, chlorine production may drop.

In the event your chlorinator is not near the anticipated life span, you may wish to try the following:

  • Water Replacement (advisable if water is older than 8 month)
  • Use a chlorine-free shock
  • Phosphates can eat chlorine. Test your phosphate level and use a remover if needed
  • Hot tub and spa owners with an ozone generator should ensure their unit is functional and operating correctly
Your Title Goes HereSALT LED DISPLAY SHOWING RED & GREEN LIGHTS

ControlOMatic builds their chlorinators with a current shutdown to protect the titanium plates and the power supply. If the LED display is showing both RED and GREEN lights at the same time, it is essential you test your water.

  • Fill a 5 gallon bucket with 2/3 spa water and 1/3 fresh water
  • Turn off the chlorinator
  • Place chlorinator, turned off, into the bucket and allow it to adjust to the temperature change (typically 5-10 minutes)
  • Turn ON chlorinator
  • If LED light is BLUE while making chlorine, you should remove 1/3 of your spa water and replace it with fresh water.

Should you perform this test and the lights remain GREEN and RED while in the bucket, please contact us. There may be a short in your saltwater system or you may need to perform additional water test to determine if the water quality is at fault.
